RICHARDSON, Texas –– LeTourneau University senior midfielder Kirby Posey and Mississippi College senior defender Carrie Kirk won player of the year awards to highlight the 2009 American Southwest Conference women’s soccer awards, the ASC office announced on Thursday (Nov. 12) after a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches.
Posey (Longview, TX / Spring Hill HS) was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 0.82 goals per game. She found the back of the net 14 times and four were game-winners. Posey took 67 shots and recorded four assists.
Kirk (Madison, MS / Madison Central HS) was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed just 20 goals and recorded eight shutouts. She also led the Lady Choctaws to a berth into the ASC tournament.
Both Posey and Kirk were named to the ASC All-Conference First Team.
Hardin-Simmons University midfielder Katie Kuykendall (Weatherford, TX / WHS), University of Texas at Tyler midfielder Kelli Hill (Whitehouse, TX / WHS) and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor defender Camryn Powell (Frisco, TX / FHS) earned top freshman awards. Kuykendall earned the title of ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year after leading the league with 21 assists, while Hill and Powell shared the honor of ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year after helping their teams rank in the league’s top 3 in shutouts.
LeTourneau sophomore midfielder Natalie White (Abilene, TX / Cooper HS) was voted ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
East Texas Baptist University’s Paul Grant was chosen as ASC Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Tigers to their first ASC tournament appearance since 2006 despite having just two upperclassmen on the roster.
