WOMEN'S RESULTS

CLINTON, MS --- The Mississippi College men and the Texas-Tyler women won 2009 American Southwest Conference Cross Country championships on Saturday morning (Oct. 31) at muddy Choctaw Trails. MC freshman Tino Gonzlez won the men's individual crown with a 28:02.32 in the 8K, while McMurry senior Carla Lewis took a first-place finish on the women's side with a 25:01.52 in the 6K. It was the sixth overall men's title and first since 2004 for MC (43 points), while Texas-Tyler (40 points) hoisted its first ever women's trophy.

Texas-Tyler (50 points) was the men's runner-up, while McMurry (49 points) came in second place on the women's side.

As far as awards, Gonzalez was freshman of the year, while McMurry senior Ken Wheeler was voted sportsmanship athlete of the year for the men, who did not have a top newcomer honoree. Texas-Tyler had the top freshman (Jessica Wanninger) and top newcomer (junior Natalie Holcomb) on the women's side. MC senior Jennifer Cooper was voted sportsmanship athlete of the year. MC head coach Butch Ard took coach of the year honors on both the men's and women's side.
