ASC FB Week 6: UMHB Still Unbeaten

Nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor maintained its perfect season record and set up a showdown with Mississippi College next week, while Sul Ross State, McMurry and Hardin-Simmons also collected victories on Saturday (Oct. 10) during Week 6 of American Southwest Conference football action.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-0, 4-0 ASC) got touchdowns from seven different players and registered its 33rd straight win in conference play – one shy of tying the ASC record – with a 54-20 triumph of visiting Louisiana College (2-3, 1-2 ASC). Quincy Daniels rushed for two touchdowns, while LiDarral Bailey also ran for a score and passed for another to lead the offensive charge by the Cru. Jeremy Salinas had nine tackles and was one of six UMHB defenders to record a sack. Jordan Rideaux caught 12 passes for 150 yards and two TDs to pace LC, which suffered its third straight loss.

Quarterback Dominique Carson ran for ASC season-highs of 287 yards and four touchdowns to pace a 35-7 victory over visiting Texas Lutheran. Carson, the conference’s leading rusher, had TD runs of 85, 46, 31 and 21 yards. Jamal Johnson had an interception, which he returned 60 yards, and 1.5 tackles for loss to lead the defensive effort for SRSU (2-3, 2-1 ASC). Chris Kyle made a game-high 15 tackles and registered a sack and two tackles for loss to lead TLU (0-5, 0-4 ASC).

After snapping a 17-game skid last week, McMurry turned around and made it two straight wins for the first time since the 2006 season with a 37-13 road victory against Howard Payne. McMurry (2-4, 2-2 ASC) broke open a 14-10 halftime lead by utilizing a 446-yard, four-TD day by quarterback Jake Mullin. R.J. Long caught three of those scoring tosses and totaled 134 yards on six catches. Delfonte Diamond also surpassed the 100-yard mark in receiving. Kevin Reyna had 10 tackles and five players combined for five sacks to pace HPU (3-2, 1-2 ASC).

Hardin-Simmons snapped its first four-game skid in the Jimmie Keeling era with a 13-10 road victory over East Texas Baptist in a game that featured just 47 passing yards. HSU (2-4, 1-3 ASC) got a 37-yard field goal from Alexander Wymore with 37 seconds left to play to provide the final result. Derrick Gant ran for 105 yards on 18 carries for HSU, while Trevor Cavness totaled 100 yards on 22 carries for ETBU (2-4, 2-2 ASC) to provide the bulk of the game’s offense. Wymore also notched a 29-yard field goal to give HSU an early 3-0 lead. The Cowboys improved to 10-0 all-time against the Tigers.

Mississippi College (4-1, 3-0 ASC) was the only conference team idle. The Choctaws’ next game will be against Mary Hardin-Baylor, who makes the trek to Clinton, Miss., next Saturday for a showdown of the only two teams without a loss in conference play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
