Texas-Dallas forward Kevin White (left) and Mississippi College defender Keith Armstrong both seniors won player of the year awards

RICHARDSON, Texas –– University of Texas at Dallas forward Kevin White and Mississippi College defender Keith Armstrong – both seniors – won player of the year awards to highlight the 2008 American Southwest Conference men’s soccer awards, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (Nov. 11) after a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches.

White (Sugar Land, TX / Dulles HS) was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year after totaling 38 points (17 goals, four assists) and guiding the Comets to the ASC title game. White also fired 83 shots on the season.

Armstrong (Tupelo, MS / THS) was voted ASC Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed just 24 goals and the need for a league-low 56 saves. Armstrong, who also guided six shutouts, led the Choctaws to the ASC tournament.

Both White and Armstrong were named to the ASC All-Conference First Team.

Hardin-Simmons University forward Isaiah Hicks (Waco, TX / Midway HS), LeTourneau University midfielder Dillon Holt (Boerne, TX / BHS) and University of Texas at Tyler defender T.J. Romaguera (Arlington, TX / Summit HS) earned top freshman awards. Hicks (five goals) and Holt (eight goals) shared the title of ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year, while Romaguera was named ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year after helping the Patriots hold opponents to a league-low 16 goals.

LeTourneau senior forward Daniel Iya (Jos, Nigeria / Hillcrest School) was voted the inaugural ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.

Texas-Tyler seventh-year boss Kenny Jones was chosen as ASC Coach of the Year after guiding the Patriots to championships in the ASC tournament and regular season.
