SEGUIN, TX --- The University of Texas at Tyler men’s cross country team won its fourth straight American Southwest Conference title on Saturday (Nov. 1) on the campus of Texas Lutheran University.

Senior Warren Brown won the individual title in an 8K time of 26:06. Coach Bob Hepler took home his fourth straight Men’s Coach of the Year honor, while senior R. J. Cowan was named as the inaugural ASC Men’s Cross Country Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.

The win was the third this season for Brown, which is a UT Tyler record. This is also the third year in a row that a Patriot runner has finished in the top spot in the conference meet. Senior Ben Donnan, who won the title in 2006 and 2007, did not compete in Saturday’s race.

In the men’s race, UT Tyler took home five of the top ten spots in the race. Cowan finished 23 seconds behind Brown in third, while junior Philbert Mutuyimana came in fifth. Sophomore Ross Renfroe finished in eighth place, while senior Bojan Kajtaz rounded out the scoring for UT Tyler in 10th place.

The Patriots finished 12 points ahead of second place McMurry.

Ozarks' David James earned freshman of the year honors.

UT Tyler will return to Seguin on Nov. 15, for the 2008 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional. The top two teams in each race will advance to the National Championship on Nov. 22, in Hanover, Ind.
